Garbage Bag Gala – Salvation Army’s Benefit – Thu, Oct 27th, 2016 – at Farmount Hotel – Pittsburgh, PA
The Garbage Bag Gala, now entering its second decade as the Nation’s most unique fundraiser and Pittsburgh’s exclusive “Couture Trashionista Event”, was founded by Family Caring Center veteran volunteer, Pamela Abdalla. Abdalla, now in her 17th year of volunteer work and programming for the children and families housed at the Family Caring Center, founded the Garbage Bag Gala as a means of financing her committed mission to providing homeless children and families housed at the Family Caring Center.
The theory behind wearing “trashwear” dresses is simple: “I thought that if we could make dresses out of garbage bags and dedicate the money we would otherwise have spent on a fancy party dress to the underlying cause, we could make significantly more money.” The idea struck a fashion chord with Pittsburgh – the first year the Gala was a simple, 10-person party in Abdalla’s home; ten years later, it’s a major fundraising event at the Fairmont with an expected crowd of 300 people.
This year’s Garbage Bag Gala is slated for Oct 27th, 2016 at the Pittsburgh downtown Fairmont, where free valet parking will be available. The cost for a ticket, $75.00 is “the expense of housing a single child or adult for a single evening at the shelter”, says Abdalla. VIP tickets are available for $100.00 and will afford the purchaser a VIP pre-party reception at 6:00pm at the Fairmont.
